Objectives
The Vocational Nursing Program will provide our students with the knowledge and skills necessary for an entry level position in the health care profession, serving under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or licensed physician. Students will receive clinical training at Board-approved training facilities local to the campus. All students will be guided through preparation classes for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-PN) for licensure as a vocational nurse, as required for meeting the standards set forth by the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT). Certificates of Completion will be awarded to graduates of our Vocational Nursing Program.
*Although the minimum number of hours for completion is set by the BVNPT at 1,530 clock hours, CMA’s Vocational Nursing Program offers 1,590 clock hours.
Career Opportunity
After passing the State Board Exam, VN graduates may find employment as vocational nurses in public health field, medical offices, psychiatric facilities, operating rooms, hospices, maternity and pediatric units, clinical labs, blood collection facilities, rehabilitation facilities, child care centers, long-term care facilities, home health agencies, weight control clinics, pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies, community programs, the nursing registry, infection control facilities, staff development positions and many other areas.
Program Overview
College of Medical Arts currently offers two full-time Vocational Nursing programs scheduled over 48 weeks, five days per week, at approximately 34-36 hours per week. All schedules exclude holidays, vacation, and make-up time. Class size does not exceed 20 students. Regulations from the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT) concerning student/teacher ratio in the clinical setting is 15:1. At CMA, we maintain a 10:1 ratio. The program is divided into three (3) semesters, each approximately 15 weeks in length. Each semester is comprised of prescribed subject matter that builds upon the previous term(s). Students must begin their training in semester one and progress sequentially through each semester until all semesters have been successfully completed. The school reserves the right to modify the sequence should the need arise.
